So, you've just had a facial and a day later you've had a breakout. Now you're here trying to find out "is this normal?". Well, I have some good news for you, it is.
After a facial not always but sometimes you may experience a breakout. This is called "Purging". You may especially experience purging after a deep cleansing facial or a more advanced facial such as microneedling or chemical peel.
So what exactly is skin purging?
Skin purging occurs when a product or treatment speeds up the skin’s cell turnover, leading to comedones. These usually appear as small whiteheads on the skin. This is the skin's way of expelling any nasties that have been waiting to come out. Ingredients such as retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, PHA, chemical peels and microneedling can prompt the skin to purge.
Is skin purging a bad thing?
Skin Purging is definitely not a bad thing, in fact, I'd say it's a good thing. It is the skin's way of resetting. Not every facial is created equally, therefore don't be alarmed if this is the first time it's happened after a facial. Your skin may have just needed to reset. What you do after is more important.
How to treat skin purging?
Continue to keep your skin clean, after a week if it is still purging try using an AHA such as glycolic acid to remove any dead skin cell's (don't do this after a chemical peel, however). After a Peel or Microneedling try an LED Light Therapy treatment to calm the skin.
How long does skin purging last?
Skin purging can last from 5 days to 6 weeks, but generally, you can expect it to last for around two weeks.
So keep calm and carry on! Your skin is just going through a little reset.
